Jillian Michaels Killer Buns & Thighs

This dvd has three 40ish minute workouts on it, levels one, two & three. All include standing & floor lower body work and cardio intervals. You will need dumbbells for all three workouts and a chair or step bench for level 3. There is a beginner & advanced modifier in each workout.

Typical Jillian style, each workout consists of rounds of 4-5 exercises performed twice. Exercises include: crab kikcs, pike to crab, Mt climbers, tuck jumps, lots of unweighted squat & lunge combos, plyo lunges, donkey kick variations, lying leg raise variations, kicks, deadlifts, runners lunge to warrior 3, front curties, pliet hops, bridge variations, kneeling pop-ups, standing leg extensions, moguls, & crab toe touches.

I rate all of these intermediate to high intermediate workouts that are easy to amp up or down by using weights or not. Jillian is pretty goofy in this one and comments quite a bit how she is irritated by the comments she gets about her workouts being too easy lol. They use pretty light dumbbells or none at all so to amp it up add heavy weights. Good w/o’s but not as challenging as I expected. I DID NOT receive this dvd to review.

This set is led by certified MMA Coach, Mike Karpenko and includes 12 super-charged mixed martial arts style DVD workouts – Everything you need comes in included in the set! All the dvds are packaged securely and in a space saving package!

TapouT XT: Plyo XT

Mike leads this 65 minute lower body focused plyometric workout in a MMA gym set with a group of exercisers. You won't need any equipment for this workout. Music and subtitle options are available and there is a countdown timer is on screen.

You perform each exercise for 45-60 seconds. Exercises include: gorilla walk, squat & kick, low lunge & hop, fl touch squat hops, side lunge abduct, plyo gorilla hops, plyo skater to curtsy, jump to knee pop ups, lunge to plank hop ups, and 180 squat hops. The workout ends with a killer move: 60 seconds of tuck jumps.

I rate this an advanced workout that had me huffing & puffing and I definitely felt soreness in my buns the next day. Mike keeps this workout moving right along with no wasted time. He does provide some welcome water breaks & short stretches. I received this dvd to review.

Firm Power Sculpt Review

Today's Review: The Firm: Power Sculpt Workout
Allie Del Rio, 2006 ***** (4.5 of 5 stars based on using real weights not the stick)

This dvd was originally packaged w/ a 9 lb sculpting stick. I used dumbbells as 9 lbs total is just too light to do anything and got a great little workout. Allie works out with 2 backgrounders in an open white & hardwood studio. This 20 minute strength workout done w/ heavier weights will provide a cardio effect.

Most exercises Allie will perform the lower then the upper body work and then combo them. Exercises include: squats with press, lunge & overhead press, dip & front raise, side lunge & row, bi curl & squat, deadlift & tri kickbacks, lying outer & inner thigh raises, walking hi planks, weighted V twists, double crunches w/ the stick behind the knees, and concludes with a stretch.

Done with the stick, this is a beginner workout but adjust your poundage to get a more challenging workout. Allie is a good lead and this workout moves right along. With heavier weights I got a great w/o in only 20 minutes. Good pace, good cuing, & good form pointers. No baby talk :) Good for days when you are short on time but want to get a bit of everything done.

This 30 min lower body dvd is a compilation from the Classic Firms. All work is done on the floor. You will need dumbbells, a step, a pair of ankle weights, and optional toe weights. 

After a warm up and stretch you move into bridge work, donkey kick variations with ankle weights and dumbbells behind the knee, weighted inner and outer thigh raises, lifts, and sweeps, and concludes with pelvic floor contractions. 

Using moderate weights this is an intermediate routine. Depending on what kind of poundage you use, this workout is appropriate for all fitness levels. A very solid routine featuring Susan Harris, Janet Jones-Gretsky, Sandahal Bergman, LaReine Chabut, and Jayne Poteet.

Jamaican Jerk Chicken Marinade Recipe

Jamaican Jerk Chicken Marinade
Adapted from a Diana’s Kitchen recipe, this explosively flavored marinade delivers moist juiciness often lacking in chicken dry rubs.
Combine:
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon Demerara or brown sugar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup orange juice
Juice of 1 lime
1 scotch bonnet or jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
3 scallions, thinly sliced

TapouT XT: Buns & Guns

Mike leads this 31 minute strength workout in a MMA gym set with a group of exercisers. You will need your TapouT resistance tubing & firewalker loop for this workout. There are music and subtitle options and an on-screen countdown timer.

Each exercise is performed for 30-45 seconds. Exercises include: loop abduction & glute raise, knee strikes adding a hop, squat adduct, curl & overhead press, reverse curls, superman w/ tri extensions, bridge & bi curl, V sit & bi curl, side plank & tri extensions, plank toe taps, and concludes w/ a killer move: 90 seconds of 1 leg plank variations. Mike uses the loop or band for all the exercises -upping the intensity & burn!

This is an intermediate workout that can be modified by adjusting the resistance of your bands. This workout hits mostly buns, bi's and tris at a nice quick pace. Mike does a great job of using the tubing & loop in unique & effective ways. The timed intervals make the time fly. I received this dvd to review.

Core Total Body Tone with Tubing: Upper Body & Core





This dvd contains an upper body focused workout and a core workout. Both utilize a cool tubing band that you can purchase from the Merrithew website (or use the tubing you already have).  John works out in a nice studio w/ 2 backgrounders.

Upper Body (21 min) Exercises include squat & overhead press, bi curl, snatch & row, oh press variations, front raises, and a bi & tri combo. 

Core (11 min) This workout hits all the muscles. Exercises include lunges, balance rows, pec fly, bridge & reverse fly, tri extension,and ab prep with tri extensions. 

I rate this an intermediate workout that could easily be modified to fit the needs of most exercisers. John provides excellent form pointers and cuing. He provides some unique and fun variations that make this a great workout for any workout library!

Mike leads this 46 minute active core workout in a MMA gym set with a group of exercisers. You will need your TapouT tubing for this workout. There are music and subtitle options and an on-screen countdown timer.

Each exercise is performed for 30-60 seconds. Exercises include floor, seated, and standing core work: kicks, plank walk to standing, superman-plank-side plank, sit up- roll to plank knee strikes, side plank reach through to superman, bob & weave with band punches, superman banana w/ punches, pushup to arm & leg raised planks, plank shifts w/ knee pulls, v knee ins, tri dips & kick, and walking standing oblique & front crunches. The workout ends with a killer move: 2 min of pushups & plank tuck jumps.

I rate this a low advanced workout as this is pretty nonstop, a lot of planks, & explosive pushups. I really like active core workouts and this was a unique & fun change of pace! Love that he includes plenty of low back work. I received this dvd to review.
